UAE’s Historic Village to Become a Museum

Ras Al Khaimah is set to transform one of the UAE’s oldest villages, Al Jazeera Al Hamra, into a year-round cultural destination. Established in the 17th century by the Al Zaab tribe, the village offers a unique glimpse into traditional life along the Arabian Gulf, showcasing the region’s rich history and pearl trade heritage.

Restoration efforts for the 45-hectare settlement began in 2010 and continue today. The village, known as the 'Red Island,' features over 500 homes originally built with coral stones and coastal pebbles, later restored using similar materials. A central souq served as the heart of the community, reflecting the simplicity of life in this coastal settlement.

In 2016, the village's fort and watchtower were the first to be restored. Previously used as a military base and private residence for the local sheikh, the fort now hosts cultural events and performances, drawing visitors from across the UAE and beyond. Plans are also underway to establish a covered museum, ensuring the site’s accessibility throughout the year and adding to its appeal as a cultural landmark.

Located near hotels and resorts, Al Jazeera Al Hamra offers an immersive historical experience for both residents and tourists. The village is currently open from Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with free entry, making it a must-visit for those keen to explore Ras Al Khaimah’s heritage.
