Dubai Police: Keeping the City Safe and Smart

Distinguished by its iconic skyline and luxurious lifestyle, Dubai is equally recognised as one of the safest places in the world. The Dubai Police Force, a law enforcement agency that combines exceptional dedication with advanced technology, upholds this reputation.

Founded in 1956, the Dubai Police Force began with just 29 officers in the modest Naif Fort. As the city expanded, so did the police force, moving to a modern facility in 1973 and slowly growing into a formidable organisation with over 17,500 sworn officers it is today.

This growth and modernisation reflect the city’s transformation from a quiet port town to a global hub and has been closely guided by the city’s leadership, particularly the vision of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The current Ruler of Dubai began his public career as the Head of Dubai Police and Public Security in 1968. Over the years, Sheikh Mohammed has continued to influence the development of Dubai Police through various initiatives aimed at modernising and enhancing the force.

Embracing cutting-edge technology, the Dubai Police has implemented an extensive network of surveillance cameras integrated with advanced AI systems. These tools enable real-time monitoring and swift responses to incidents, ensuring that Dubai maintains its status as one of the safest cities in the world. Robot officers and smart police stations operating without human personnel? In Dubai, the future is closer than many anticipate.

Another striking manifestation of the Dubai Police’s innovative spirit is the fleet of supercars featuring high-end models from Ferrari, Lamborghini, and even a $2 million Bugatti Veyron. These vehicles both reflect the city’s flair for luxury and serve practical roles in patrolling high-profile areas. The supercar fleet has become an emblem of the unique local approach to law enforcement, where functionality meets the city’s characteristic opulence.

But the force is by no means restricted to roads or land in general. The Dubai Police Air Wing provides aerial support for various operations, including traffic monitoring, search and rescue missions, and surveillance. The air unit is equipped with advanced helicopters and drones, allowing the force to respond quickly to incidents across the city and beyond, including in remote or difficult-to-access areas.

The Marine or Sea Police Unit patrols Dubai’s extensive coastline, safeguarding the waters around the emirate. This unit is responsible for a wide range of operations, including anti-smuggling activities, search and rescue missions, and ensuring maritime safety. They operate a fleet of high-speed boats and advanced watercraft to monitor and respond to incidents in Dubai’s coastal waters and marinas.

Dubai Police also made significant strides in promoting gender equality, integrating women into vital organisational roles. Female officers trained in areas such as jiu-jitsu or sharpshooting and even serving on the elite SWAT team exemplify the force’s dedication to inclusivity and ability to evolve with the times.

But it’s not all about enforcing the law. At the core of Dubai Police’s mission is enhancing community well-being. Through initiatives ranging from traffic management to proactive response in an unlikely scenario of a crisis, the Dubai Police ensures that the city remains a place where people of all nationalities and backgrounds can thrive.
