Born in 1949, Sheikh Mohammed is the third son of Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum. His early years were shaped by his father's influence and his family's rich cultural heritage. He received his early education in Dubai before furthering his studies in England, where Sheikh Mohammed honed his command of English and underwent military training at the Mons Officer Cadet School in Aldershot. These formative experiences prepared him for the significant roles he would later assume.
Sheikh Mohammed's ascent began in 1968 when he was appointed Head of Dubai Police and Public Security. This marked the start of a distinguished career in public service, and in 1971, he became the UAE's first Minister of Defence, a position he has held ever since.
In 1995, Sheikh Mohammed was appointed Crown Prince of Dubai. This role allowed him to implement his vision for Dubai's rapid development. He launched numerous initiatives, including the Dubai Shopping Festival in 1996 and the Dubai World Cup, the world's richest horse race. These events not only boosted Dubai's economy but also placed it firmly on the global tourism and sporting map.
Upon becoming the Ruler of Dubai in 2006, following the death of his brother, Sheikh Maktoum, Sheikh Mohammed intensified his efforts to transform the emirate. He spearheaded the creation of Dubai Internet City, Dubai Media City, and the Dubai International Financial Centre, turning Dubai into a hub for technology, media, and finance. His leadership also saw the launch of iconic projects such as the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, and the Palm Jumeirah, the ultra-luxurious man-made island visible from space.
Beyond his administrative and developmental accomplishments as the Ruler of Dubai and the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed is also a celebrated poet and an ardent supporter of cultural and humanitarian initiatives. His Nabati poetry, written under pseudonyms in his early years, has gained widespread acclaim. He has established several foundations and awards to promote education, health, and social welfare, including the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and Dubai Cares.
Sheikh Mohammed is also a passionate equestrian enthusiast and the founder of Godolphin, one of the world’s most prestigious and successful thoroughbred horse racing stables. Established in 1994, Godolphin has become synonymous with excellence in the sport, producing numerous champions and winning some of the most coveted races around the globe. The stable operates in several countries, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, and the United States.
Sheikh Mohammed is renowned for his efforts to stay connected with Dubai's citizens. He frequently attends various festivals and visits cafes or even grocery stores, often catching the general public by surprise. These interactions exemplify his commitment to maintaining a close relationship with the people, ensuring he remains in touch with their needs and concerns.
As Dubai continues to grow and innovate, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's leadership remains a guiding force. His contributions to Dubai and the wider UAE have left an indelible mark, earning him admiration and respect both locally and globally. And as he celebrates his 75th birthday, the entire nation celebrates it with him.
