Mohammed Bin Rashid Library: The Bookish Wonder of Dubai

The city, known for its record-breaking architecture and grand visions, has added another feather to its cap with the Mohammed Bin Rashid Library. Officially opened in June 2022, this bibliophile's paradise is designed to educate and inspire rather than just be a collection of books.

The brainchild of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the library is a monumental ode to knowledge. Officially opened in June 2022, this stunning seven-storey structure, shaped like an open book on a lectern, was envisioned as a cultural hub to foster a love for reading and intellectual growth.

The library's unique design symbolises Dubai's forward-thinking spirit and commitment to education. Inside, you'll find eight specialised collections, from the Children's Library to the Business Library, each meticulously curated.

Nestled on the first floor, the Maps and Atlases Library is a treasure trove for geography enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. With a burgeoning collection of over 2,600 printed maps, travel publications, manuscripts, and digital media in various languages, it stands as one of the most comprehensive libraries of its kind in the region.

Visitors can freely browse and study these materials in the designated reading areas. For those interested in rare and fragile items, maritime, celestial, and terrestrial maps are also part of the special collections, with some displayed in the Treasures of the Library exhibition on the seventh floor.

As one would guess, the Treasures of the Library exhibition has got its name for a reason. It’s a haven for history buffs and bibliophiles alike, showcasing an impressive array of rare and ancient books, atlases, and manuscripts, some dating back to the 13th century. Among the treasures are unique copies of the Holy Quran, early editions of literary classics, and Latin translations from the Islamic Golden Age.

Highlights include the first edition of Blaeu's Atlas Maior, a masterpiece from the 17th-century Dutch cartographer Johannes Blaeu, featuring about 600 maps published in 1662. It's considered the richest and most beautiful atlas ever made. Another gem is the first edition of Napoleon's Description de l'Égypte, an 18th-century encyclopaedic record of Egyptian history produced during Napoleon Bonaparte's campaign in Egypt. This monumental work in 34 volumes, is celebrated as a pinnacle of French publishing and a vital historical document.

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Library aims to be a global reference point for the Arabic language and a nurturing ground for scholars, writers, and creatives. Plus, with its futuristic tech and cosy reading corners, it’s as much about preserving heritage as it is about embracing the digital age. But the isn't just about books. It hosts over 100 cultural and intellectual events annually, features a permanent art gallery, and houses the Civilization Museum and Arab Heritage Museum, celebrating the region's rich history. Whether you're a professional researcher, a student, or simply a curious explorer, you should definitely drop by. This Dubai landmark never disappoints.
