Vacheron Constantin Métiers d’Art Tribute to Traditional Symbols: Revoking the Glory of Imperial China

Vacheron Constantin has always been a name that evokes the height of luxury and craftsmanship in watchmaking. With the latest collection, the brand continues this legacy by creating limited-edition timepieces paying a nod to the cultural heritage of China’s imperial past.

This special series was brought to life through a unique collaboration with Mr. Song, a former associate research librarian from the Palace Museum in Beijing's Forbidden City. His deep knowledge played a crucial role in guiding Vacheron Constantin’s artisans as they translated the ancient ‘Seawater Cliff’ motif – a symbol of strength and resilience from the Ming and Qing dynasties – into modern masterpieces.

Imagine powerful waves crashing against towering cliffs – a sight that symbolised protection and power to the emperors of China. This motif was often found in the intricate embroidery of the emperors’ ceremonial robes, and now, it has been reimagined on the dials of these exquisite watches.

Each piece in the Métiers d’Art series is housed in a 38 mm case made from either pink or white gold. But what really makes these watches stand out is the level of detail on the dials. The first design, known as the ‘Eternal Flow,’ uses cloisonné enamel, a technique that dates back to ancient China. This method involves creating tiny compartments on the dial with gold wires and then filling them with enamel. The result is a vibrant, colourful scene that captures the flowing waves and rugged cliffs in breathtaking detail. It’s a process that requires incredible skill and patience, with each colour being fired individually to achieve the perfect hue.

The second design, ‘Moonlight Slivers,’ offers a more serene interpretation. Here, the waves and cliffs are engraved onto the dial, creating a monochromatic, three-dimensional effect that is both subtle and striking. The engraving is then complemented with carefully placed gemstones that add a touch of sparkle reminiscent of the moonlight reflecting on the water’s surface. It’s a watch that feels like a quiet night by the sea – peaceful yet powerful.

Visible through the sapphire case back is the in-house automatic calibre 2460 beating at 4 Hz and offering a 40-hour power reserve. As you would expect from the oldest manufacture boasting an uninterrupted luxury watch production since 1755, the finishings are impeccable, allowing the mechanical part to stay on par with the fantastic dials.

But what makes the Métiers d’Art Tribute to Traditional Symbols series truly special is how it bridges the gap between past and present, East and West. These watches are a celebration of cultural exchange, where Vacheron Constantin has taken the best of Chinese artistic tradition and combined it with Swiss watchmaking expertise. The result is a collection that feels both timeless and timely, pieces that honour history while remaining incredibly relevant today.
