The new system will serve as an alternative to the traditional Emirates ID card and is expected to launch within the next year. It will allow residents and citizens to verify their identity digitally, without needing to present a physical ID for common transactions like hotel check-ins, medical appointments, or financial services.
The initiative was discussed during a session of the Federal National Council, where members raised concerns about the ongoing reliance on physical ID cards despite the country's digital advancements. Some sectors – including hospitals and banks – still require the original card, posing an inconvenience for many residents.
In response, Abdul Rahman Al Owais, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs, confirmed that the e-Emirates ID has already been adopted in several services. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) is now working to expand its reach further, prioritising essential sectors highlighted by the Council.
Authorities say the shift to digital ID is part of a broader push toward innovation and smart governance, aiming to make daily interactions more efficient while ensuring high standards of security and privacy.
