AI-Powered Traffic Signals to Transform Dubai’s Roads

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has begun work on a next-generation traffic signal system designed to ease congestion and improve mobility across the city. The UTC-UX Fusion system will incorporate artificial intelligence (AI), predictive analytics, and digital twin technology, with full implementation expected by mid-2026.

As part of Dubai’s commitment to smart and sustainable urban development, the system aims to reduce waiting times at intersections by 10 to 20 percent. It will dynamically adjust signal timings based on real-time data, benefiting motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and public transport users. Emergency vehicles and priority transport will also see improved access through high-traffic areas.

One of the standout features of the UTC-UX Fusion system is its predictive traffic analysis, which optimises signal performance based on anticipated vehicle movements. Additionally, digital twin technology will allow authorities to simulate adjustments before applying them on the road. The system will also integrate with future smart mobility initiatives, such as Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS/V2X), which enable direct communication between traffic signals and smart vehicles.
