UAE Launches Cash-Paying Weight Loss Challenge

With nearly 40% of adults and children in the UAE classified as obese, the country is once again rolling out its biggest weight loss challenge to promote healthier lifestyles. The RAK Biggest Weight Loss Challenge (RBWLC) returns for its fifth edition, running from February 21 to May 22, offering participants the chance to win up to AED 300 per kilogram lost.

The initiative, organized by RAK Hospital, aims to combat obesity-related health risks such as diabetes and heart disease. This year, a new family category has been introduced, encouraging households to work together on their weight loss journey. Participants in the physical category will receive cash prizes, while virtual competitors can win gym memberships, wellness packages, and vacation vouchers.

Weigh-ins for the physical category take place at RAK Hospital, while virtual participants can check in at any local clinic. There are also corporate and school challenges, rewarding teams with the highest average weight loss. Last year, over 18,000 people took part, with one participant shedding 30 kg and earning AED 9,000.

As obesity rates continue to climb, organizers hope the competition will inspire long-term lifestyle changes. Growing interest from outside the UAE has prompted discussions about expanding the challenge to a wider audience in the future.
