Pink Moon to Rise Over Dubai on April 13

Dubai residents will have the chance to witness a rare astronomical event this month as a 'pink moon' appears in the early morning sky on Sunday, April 13. The moonrise is expected at 5:56 am, offering a brief but memorable moment for those up early enough to catch it.

Despite its name, the pink moon won’t actually appear pink. The term originates from the spring bloom of wildflowers, particularly pink phlox, in parts of North America. The moon itself will retain its usual silvery tone – but the 2025 edition will come with a twist.

This year’s pink moon is also a micromoon, meaning it will occur when the moon is at its furthest point from Earth. As a result, it will look slightly smaller and dimmer than a typical full moon.

According to Khadijah Hasan Ahmad, Operations Manager at Dubai Astronomy Group, the best viewing experience will be from areas with a clear view of the western horizon, shortly before the moon sets.

Stargazing is a growing hobby in the UAE, and the country offers several ideal locations for night sky observation – from desert retreats to mountain plateaus. The Dubai Astronomy Group regularly organises viewing sessions and events, making it easier for residents to engage with the skies above.

While this pink moon won’t bring dramatic colour to the skyline, it’s a rare micromoon event and a serene way to start a Sunday – whether enjoyed solo or with fellow sky watchers.
