Autonomous Taxi Trials Begin in Dubai as City Moves Toward Self-Driving Future

Dubai is taking a major step forward in its autonomous mobility ambitions, with a fleet of self-driving taxis set to begin public trials this year. The pilot programme will introduce 50 fully autonomous vehicles onto city streets in 2025 as part of a strategic collaboration between the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Apollo Go, the ride-hailing arm of Chinese tech company Baidu. The goal is to test and refine the service ahead of a broader rollout across the emirate in 2026.

The vehicles – electric RoboTaxis equipped with more than 40 sensors and smart safety systems – are part of Dubai’s wider plan to transform how people move around the city. In total, 1,000 autonomous cabs are expected to be introduced over the next three years.

The initiative forms part of Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy, which aims to make 25 percent of all trips in the city autonomous by 2030. Officials say the benefits will go far beyond convenience, with estimates suggesting the shift could reduce traffic accidents by 12 percent, increase productivity by 13 percent, and generate more than AED 22 billion in economic value.
