UAE Lifts Drone Ban with New Safety Rules

Drone enthusiasts in the UAE can now enjoy the skies again as the country has officially lifted its ban on individual drone use as of January 7, 2025. The move, announced by the Ministry of Interior in collaboration with the General Civil Aviation Authority, opens the door for hobbyists and businesses to operate drones under strict regulations designed to ensure public safety and airspace security.

The new rules categorize users into two groups: individuals flying for recreational purposes and organizations using drones for commercial activities. For recreational users, drones must weigh no more than 5kg and can only be flown during daylight hours and in good weather. Specific zones designated for drone flights are listed on the ‘My Drone Hub’ app, ensuring that operators steer clear of restricted areas like airports and sensitive locations. Additionally, drones equipped with cameras must comply with UAE privacy laws.

To facilitate the safe and efficient use of drones, the UAE has introduced the Unified National Drone Platform. This system simplifies the registration process and ensures all drones meet safety standards before taking to the air. Users are required to keep their drones within their line of sight and adhere to altitude limits, with flights capped at 400 feet above ground level.

However, recreational drone use remains prohibited in Dubai. The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority (DCAA) has confirmed that the suspension is still in place within the emirate, urging residents to comply with current regulations and stay updated through its official channels.
